When Emily entered the world of real estate, one of the first things
she noticed was the incredibly large carbon footprint of the industry. Everything from
paper waste (flyers, contracts, closing documents, business cards, post cards, folders,
binders, notebooks, magazines etc. etc. etc.), to fuel waste (it takes a lot of driving
to run this business), to inefficient home designs and wasteful construction methods.
Emily felt uncomfortable working in a business that seemed so incongruous with her own
personal lifestyle.
So... Emily decided to be different - to run her business in a way
that enabled respect and awareness of the environment. Emboldened by the Realtor Code Of
Ethics Preamble which states that part of a Realtor's duty is the "preservation of a
healthful environment" Emily charged forth, creating marketing materials made from 100%
post consumer content paper, binders and tab dividers from 100% post consumer cardboard,
and soy-based inks on her business cards. Further, Emily has earned the Eco-Broker designation
which addresses everything from the in-home environment (things like mold and asbestos) to
green building methods. Emily is working with a fellow Realtor to create Green
Homes Whatcom - a team of home-oriented professionals whose goal is to act as a
resource for the general public on all aspects related to living an eco-conscious lifestyle.
